Entrevista con los Autores de Loli Loves Venom

Desde que hicimos el primer episodio de Webcomics el año pasado, hemos estado tratando de contactar a varios de los autores de los webcomics en español que encontramos para entrevistarlos (oyeron Shinosos? No se hagan los difíciles! 😉 ). Unos autores que tratamos de contactar fue a los de Loli Loves Venom, ya que sus nombres sonaban algo latinazos. Cuando respondieron, de paso nos dieron una pequeña sorpresa: no podían hablar español! Sucede que son originarios de Portugal, así que no spanish for you! Bueno, tal vez podíamos hacer una entrevista en inglés, no? (Comic Geekos in english, oooy!) Digo, la tira está en inglés así que no problem, right? Right? Pues no, sólo escriben en inglés, no lo hablan. Pero los Geekos siempre hacemos esfuerzos heróicos y esta vez nos sobrepusimos a la barrera del lenguaje: Si no podíamos hacer la entrevista en el podcast, la dejamos para el blog, no? Así que ahí les va, en versión traducida y para los que no les guste el doblaje les dejo el original en inglés al final…

Antes, un poco de información. Loli Loves Venom es creada y dibujada por Joanna Lafuente, y aunque su escritor y colaborador más frecuente es Miguel Martins ella también acepta contribuciones de cualquiera que pueda aportar una buena idea y guión para una tira (es cierto, vayan al sitio para averiguar cómo). Así que sin más preámbulo, comenzamos:

* Qué están estudiando actualmente? Diseño Gráfico?
Joana Lafuente: En realidad estoy en Ingeniería de Informática y Computación. Nunca he estudiado Arte. Dibujo lo que me gusta y no me siento muy obligada al respecto – en lo que respecta a las locuras con las que salen los profesores de arte. Sólo empecé por mi cuenta.
Miguel Martins: Sí, sucede que estamos en el mismo curso

* Dónde estudian?
J.L.: “Instituto Superior Técnico – Taguspark” – Debo mencionar que ahí es básicamente donde vivo la mayor parte del tiempo, eh.
MM: “Faculdade de Ciências de Lisboa”

* El hacer esta tira ha influenciado sus estudios en alguna forma (lo han incluído en un proyecto escolar)?
J.L.: No, pero si se imaginan que mis colegas estudiantes tienen dificultades en manejar su tiempo y tener sus proyectos a raya y ellos no tienen un webcomic, lo difícil que se torna a veces lidiar con esto. Cuando es necesario, debo hacer un esfuerzo extra – robar horas de sueño – para mantenerlo actualizado semanalmente

* Qué otros proyectos tienes en tu agenda?

J.L.: Muchos. Hago algunos comics y publicaciones no profesionales y tengo mis propias producciones, pero nada comparado a “Loli Loves Venom”. Es mi primer webcomic y un reto humorístico.
MM: Varios, pero este webcomic es el primero que ha pegado tanto en Internet.

* Hasta dónde les gustaría que llegara Loli Loves Venom (Tal vez la tira conquistará al mundo!)
J.L.: Estoy feliz con su condición actual. Sólo el hecho de sacarle una buena risa a la gente y obtener su retroalimentación (no sólo del Internet sino que de la “vida real” también) es lo suficientemente grandioso para mí! La gente pide mercancía y que lo publique pero todos sabemos que no puedo hacerlo. Si alguien de la Marvel me lo pide, con gusto lo llevaría más lejos para que uds. la puedan tener impresa. Pero todavía considero la tira como un proyecto comunitario. Me gusta oír las ideas de la gente y darles un chance de mostrar sus habilidades, especialmente a escritores que por lo que puedo ver tienen dificultad de encontrar su lugar bajo el sol, mucho más de lo que tienen los artistas gráficos.
MM: Publicarlo sería la cosa perfecta, aquí estoy con la esperanza que Marvel algún día encuentre interés en esto.
Aparte de eso si pudiéramos hacer arder al mundo. Hmmmm, fuego.

Acerca de la tira:

* Cómo empezó Loli Loves Venom? Loli está basada en alguien que conoces?

J.L.: Bueno… la forma que empezó fue algo chistosa. Esperaba dentro de mi auto a una persona, y estuve ahí por 2 horas completas haciendo absolutamente nada (sólo tenía mi cuaderno y un lápiz). Esto dá mucho tiempo para pensar, no es así? Un par de días antes vi en el website de Marvel un comic curioso llamado “Spider-Man loves Mary Jane” y mientras estaba en el auto comenzé a dibujar a Venom y me llegó la idea: Qué tal un comic similar pero con Venom y una pequeña niña? El contraste entre una niña y un monstruo siempre me fascinó. Y unas noches antes había hecho un boceto de una niña, una niña al azar por ese entonces, y decidí usarla en el webcomic. El título como lo habrán descifrado es una parodia obvia al comic previamente mencionado de la Marvel.

* Por qué Venom? Por qué no…. el Lagarto, por ejemplo?

J.L.: Porque amo a Venom!
MM: Porque … porque…. VENOM!!! Tienes algo en contra de Venom? HM??

* El arte es muy orientado al manga/anime. Tienes algún anime o manga en particular que ha influenciado la tira?
J.L.: Tengo algo que confesar: raramente veo/leo anime/manga – puedo contar el anime que he visto con los dedos de mis manos y lo mismo con el manga. Simplemente porque me gusta todo tipo de animación o dibujo no soy fanática y me bloqueo a otros estilos sólo porque sí. Dibujo orientada al manga/anime principalmente por mi artista favorito – Yasuhiro Nightow (nota geeka: Nightow es el autor de la serie Trigun – buena!!) – quien es japónes, sí, pero es un gran fan de comics americanos así que su estilo también es una mezcla de varios estilos y esa ha sido siempre mi meta. Una de las cosas que me fascina más sobre el “estilo Japonés” y el de Disney es por ejemplo su expresividad. Gana muchos puntos por esto – en mi opinión – y valoro mucho la expresividad. Tengo muchos artistas en mi lista de “mejores artistas” pero 1 en 20 es Japonés.
MM: Tengo que decir que adoro los estilos de arte donde el artista une influencias en lugar de basarse en una o dos nada más, de ahí que estoy disfrutando tanto el trabajo de Joana.

* Puedes darnos información sobre el proceso para la tira (cuánto tarda, si la haces directo a la computadora o si pasa por papel primero, etc.)
J.L.: Directo a la computadora! Hice… *piensa* 4 en papel… todas las demás usando sólo computadora. Mi escritor Miguel Martins hace unos storyboards chistosos y me los dá dibujados en lugar de escritos, lo cual ahorra tiempo. Usualmente me tardo 3-4 horas por tira – es bastante pero a veces se tarda más porque lo disfruto de tal manera que disminuyo el paso. Es algo raro y tonto pero sucede. Quiero dejar registrado que mis herramientas elegidas son un bolígrafo Wacom y Photoshop CS2. Ya no sé lo que es vivir sin ellas!

* Qué tipo de respuesta has obtenido de lectores? Tienes fans/lectores entusiastas?

J.L.: Claro que sí. Más buenos que malos lo cual siempre es genial pero no me importa que la gente se queje en tanto sea de forma constructiva. Siempre estoy dispuesta a escuchar sugerencias y críticas de todo tipo. Me llegan unos comentarios grandiosos que de verdad hacen mi día! Si a la gente le gusta, entonces soy una persona feliz.
MM: Hemos tenido una mezcla de comentarios. Siempre es divertido ver a la tira alcanzar nuevos lugares, más chistoso porque hasta hace poco no teníamos enlaces promocionando de ningún sitio. Se hizo popular por nuestros fans.

Finalmente:

* Ese pobre niño que Venom puso en la punta del Empire State… algún día va a bajar?

J.L.: Oh, se refieren a Johnny? Ahah bueno esto es algo que van a tener que averiguar por su cuenta (más tarde)!
MM: Es el mejor jugador de escondidas que ha existido jamás!

* You are currently studying what? Graphic Design?
Joana Lafuente: Actually I’m at Computer and Informatics Engineering. Never been to arts. I like to draw what I like and don’t feel very obligated about it – when it comes to that crazy stuff art teachers come out with. I just started on my own.
Miguel Martins: Yeah, turns out we are both at the same type of course.

* Where are you studying?
J.L.: “Instituto Superior Técnico – Taguspark” – I should say that’s basically where I live most of the time too eh.
MM: “Faculdade de Ciências de Lisboa”

* Has making the strip influenced your studies in some way? (have you included it in a school project)
J.L.: No, but if my colleges at school have difficult times to keep their projects in line and time and don’t have a webcomic, you can imagine how hard it is sometimes to deal with it. When necessary, I must do an extra effort – aka take some hours from my sleep – to keep it updated every week.

* What other projects do you have lined up?

J.L.: Many. I do some comics to non-professional publishings and I’ve my own self productions, but nothing compared to “Loli Loves Venom”. It’s my first webcomic, it was a funny challenge.
MM: Several, this webcomic is the first one to have hit deeper into the internet tho.

* Where would you like Loli Loves Venom to go (Maybe the strip will conquer the world!)
J.L.: I’m happy about how it is right now. Just the fact of ripping a good laugh from people and getting their feedback (not only from the internet but from “real life” too) it’s great for me already! People asked for merchandise and to publish it but we all know I can’t do it. If someone official from Marvel comes and ask me for it, I’ll gladly push it further so that you guys can have it printed. But I still like to think of it as a community project. I like to hear people ideas and give them a chance to show their capabilities, especially to writers which, from what I see, have a hard time to find their place at the sun, much more than graphical artists.
MM: Publishing it would be the perfect thing, here is hoping that Marvel one day finds interest into it.
Other than that we could set the world on fire. Hmmm, fire.

Now, about the strip

* How did Loli Loves Venom start? Was Loli based on someone you know?

J.L.: Well… how it started was kind of funny. I was waiting for a person in my car, and I stood there for 2 full hours doing absolutely nothing (only had my school book and a pencil). It gives plenty time to think, isn’t it? A couple of days before I saw in Marvel’s website a curious comic named “Spider-Man loves Mary Jane” and while I was in the car I started doodling Venom and then it hit me: How about a comic with Venom instead and a little girl? The contrast between a girl and a monster always fascinated me. And, some nights before, I had made a sketch of a girl, random girl by that time, and I decided to use her for the webcomic. The title you can already figure out that it was an obvious parody to the mentioned Marvel’s comic.

* Why Venom? Why not… the Lizard, for example?

J.L.: Because I love Venom!
MM: Because…because… VENOM!!! You got something against venom ? HM??

* The art is very manga/anime oriented. Do you have anime or manga any in particular that influenced the strip?
J.L.: I’ve to confess something: I barely see/read anime/manga – I can count the anime that I saw with the fingers of my hands and same goes to manga. Simply because I like of every kind of animation/drawing and I’m don’t go fanatic and block myself to other styles just because. I draw in a manga/anime oriented mostly of my favourite artist – Yasuhiro Nightow –, which is Japanese yes, but he’s too a big fan of American comics so his style is a mix of many too, and that was always my goal. One of the things that most fascinates me about the “Japanese style” and Disney’s for example it’s its expressivity. It wins many points for that – in my opinion – and I value expressivity a lot. I’ve many other artists in my “greatest artists to me” list but 1 in 20 is Japanese.
MM: Got to say I love art styles where the artist merges influences instead of base from one or two alone, hence enjoying Joana’s work so much.

* Could you give us some information about the process for the strip? (how long does it take, if you make it straight into the computer or draw it out on paper first, etc.)
J.L.: Straight to the computer! I did… *thinks* 4 in the paper… All the others using computer only. My writer, Miguel Martins, does some really funny storyboards and gives them to me drawn instead of written, which saves me some time. Usually I take 3-4 hours per strip – it’s still a bit but sometimes it takes longer because I’m enjoying it in such a way that I slow down. It’s a little weird and dumb but it happens. For the record, my tools of election are a Wacom pen and Photoshop CS2. I don’t know what is to live without them any more!

* What kind of feedback have you gotten from readers? Do you get enthusiastic fans/readers?

J.L.: I sure do. Most good than bad which is always great but I don’t mind people complaining as long it is in a constructive way. I’m always up to listen to suggestions and critiques of any kind. I get some really great comments that really make my day! If people like it, then I’m a happy person.
MM: We have got some really mixed comments, its always fun to see it reach new places, funnier even due to the fact that until very recently we didn’t had links to it from anywhere. It spread through our fans.

And finally:

* That poor kid Venom put on top of the Empire State Building… Will he ever come down?

J.L.: Oh, you mean Johnny? Ahah well that’s something you’ll have to find out by yourself (later)!
MM: He is the best hide and seek player, ever!
